- Provide students with special education support services with appropriate learning activities and experiences to help them fulfill their potential.
- Follow special education regulations set forth by the district, state, and federal guidelines.
- Enable students to develop competencies and skills for intellectual, emotional, physical, behavioral, and social growth to function successfully in society.
- Oversee the programming and support for the assigned students, documenting evidence, gathering data, and preparing documents to report on progress and make recommendations to the ARD committee.
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or training for the subject and level assigned.
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
- Knowledge of curriculum and instructional methods including accommodations, adaptations, and alterations.
- Knowledge of disabilities and supports to address specific needs of special populations.
- Specialized training/experience in behavior modification, pro-social skills, and/or supports to address behavioral needs.
- Knowledge of the ARD Committee process, Full and Individual Evaluation process, IEP goal-setting, data collection, supplements, and implementation requirements.
Experience:
- One-year student teaching or approved internship.
- Provide and support specially designed instruction and collect data to monitor student progress, including academic, behavioral, and other functional goals.
- Use student data to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods appropriate to the student according to district requirements.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and campus teams to develop, implement, and provide lessons and interventions, including accommodations, modifications, prerequisite skills, and behavioral/social supports.
- Plan appropriate instructional strategies and behavioral prosocial strategies using activities, materials, equipment, and technology.
- Manage or assist campus staff in using Behavior Intervention Plans, IEP goals, accommodations, and supports as appropriate.
- Support students inside and outside the classroom for instruction, intervention, prevention, and monitoring.
- Maintain student support records, logs, and documentation per district procedures.
- Provide a safe environment; utilize de-escalation strategies and interventions; crisis prevention and intervention training required.
- Participate in campus PLC and collaborative meetings.
- Work closely with teachers and other campus staff using data to guide instruction.
- Conduct observations and formative assessments to determine baseline and progress data.
- Use district screener tools to gain student performance data to share with parents and at annual ARD meetings.
- Assist campus administration with implementation of collaborative behavioral support systems.
- Facilitate meetings with student intervention teams to design and implement behavior interventions.
- Gather and present behavioral data (functional behavioral analysis, time sampling, frequency).
- Assist in developing and maintaining behavior plans for special education and 504.
- Maintain communication with parents, keeping lines open, positive, and professional.
- Participate in conferences and collaborate with parents.
- Participate in professional learning communities and collaborative meetings.
- Attend and participate in faculty, department, district meetings; serve on committees.
- Contribute to district, department, and content goals as an effective team member.
- Plan and participate in ARD, LPAC, 504, and RtI meetings.
- Assist in upholding administrative regulations and board policy.
- Submit legal documents timely per federal, state, district guidelines.
- Use district online platform for ARD preparation and documentation; upload logs and work samples.
- Monitor progress on IEP goals/objectives every 9 weeks; update progress at the end of each 9 weeks in online platform.
- Prepare for and participate in ARD committee meetings; prepare drafts for recommendations.
- Maintain professional records and personal schedule with organization, timelines, priorities, and accuracy.
- Follow DISD operating guidelines relevant to position.
- Participate in staff development to improve skills and student outcomes.
- Stay abreast of developments in profession; display openness to change and innovation.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships, open communication, and collaboration with stakeholders.
- Comply with federal, state, district regulations and policies for special education teachers.
