Job Description

Personnel in this job title may be covered by NERC CIP cyber security standards. If the position is covered, prior to being hired, promoted, or transferred into the position, the candidate must successfully pass a Personnel Risk Assessment, which includes identity verification and a criminal background check. Prior to being granted unescorted access to cyber secure areas, the candidate must attend cyber security training.

Annual cyber security training is also required. Given the financial nature of this position, this position may be required to obtain a credit check depending on location. If the position is covered, prior to being hired, promoted, or transferred into the position, the candidate must successfully pass a credit background check.

Summary

Under general supervision, the Engineer plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates engineering work for projects ranging from moderate to large scope, including complex and high‑profile projects. The role may serve as staff advisor and consultant, leading engineering studies, and representing the company’s interests in advanced engineering matters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides the engineering expertise necessary to support intermediate and large projects that are conventional or complex in nature.
  • Conducts or leads performance, cost, and scheduling studies/evaluations, using advanced techniques and modifying standard practices as needed.
  • Applies routine and advanced engineering techniques to operational areas.
  • Communicates engineering ideas, recommendations, and evaluations effectively to engineering and non‑engineering individuals and groups.
  • Represents the company in intermediate to advanced engineering matters and serves as a staff advisor or consultant.
  • Identifies and resolves broad technical and/or organizational issues affecting company goals and objectives.
  • Provides technical direction and supervision to contractors and company personnel on a project or assignment basis.
  • Functions as a lead for staff engineers, professionals, and technicians and provides training as appropriate.
  • Participates in the formulation and improvement of company and industry standards.
  • Supports operational areas through the application of standard and non‑standard engineering techniques.
  • Interacts with and provides technical support to associates.
Competencies
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply standard engineering principles, practices and regulations, and economic and decision‑analysis principles to a wide range of utilities issues.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply national, state, and local codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ACI, AISC, ASME, NACE, etc.).
  • Ability to translate electrical theory and physics to utility applications for improved system reliability.
  • Comfortable working in and around high voltage (up to 345 kV) electrical facilities and equipment.
  • Strong leadership, self‑motivation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to forecast budgets and make informed repair decisions following company protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex problems and apply common sense to carry out complex instructions.
Qualifications
  • Minimum education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution, plus 2–7 years of engineering experience (depending on level) or equivalent experience with a Fundamentals of Engineering certificate or a Master’s Degree.
  • Preferred:
    Master’s Degree in Engineering, Professional Engineer license in New Mexico, or other advanced credentials.
  • Certificates, licenses, and registrations:
    Fundamentals of Engineering certificate preferred; current, legally valid driver’s license required.
  • Communication skills:
    Ability to read, interpret, and write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before diverse audiences.
  • Computer skills:
    Proficiency with electrical engineering design programs, Autocad, Word, Access, Excel, and Windows.
  • Physical demands:
    Frequent sitting, standing, walking; lifting up to 50 lbs; protective equipment required (hard‑hat, safety glasses, hearing protection).
  • Work environment:
    Time divided between office and field; exposure to high voltage electricity, computers, office equipment, and construction equipment.
