Position SummaryThe Mental Health Technician functions as an active part of the treatment team, providing continuous patient care, supervision, interaction, and role modeling to patients ranging from adolescence through geriatrics. All MHTs work under the direction of a Registered Nurse and report any changes in a patient’s condition.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring unit safety by conducting visual observations, collecting and recording vital signs, reporting abnormalities, and documenting findings.
- Employing appropriate crisis techniques as needed.
- Assisting patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living under RN oversight.
- Establishing and maintaining a professional therapeutic relationship with patients, modeling and teaching appropriate social skills.
- Facilitating daily groups, promoting clinical programming adherence, and responding to emergency codes.
- Safely transporting patients of BHC via van/bus to various locations.
- High School Degree or equivalent.
- One-year related experience in psychiatric patient care with understanding of mental health signs and symptoms (preferred). One year driving experience preferred.
- BLS Healthcare Provider course completed dle with Care and Verbal De‑Escalation training completed within 60 days and annually thereafter.
- Valid driver’s license, at least 21 years old, and not having any of the following within last 36 months: conviction for alcohol/drug‑related offense while driving, license suspension/revoked, two or more speeding violations or one or more other serious violations, or involvement in one chargeable accident.
- Ability to identify and address special needs for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and communicate with them; ability to work with patients at all levels of functional ability and from diverse backgrounds; practices teamwork.
- Ability to manage time independently, prioritize work, and exhibit excellent organizational and communication skills. Requires knowledge of road and vehicle safety techniques and ability to use complex technical information.
