Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief

TxDOT's Galveston Maintenance Section is seeking a dependable and experienced professional to serve as a Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief to lead a road maintenance crew while overseeing the section's herbicide operations. In this role, you will:

  • Supervise, train, and coordinate a road maintenance crew performing routine and emergency roadway maintenance.
  • Plan, prioritize, and oversee maintenance activities, including pavement repairs, drainage maintenance, shoulder work, traffic control, and storm response.
  • Manage the section's vegetation control program through the safe, effective, and compliant application of herbicides.
  • Ensure roadways are maintained to provide safe travel conditions and clear visibility for the traveling public.
  • Coordinate daily work assignments, equipment utilization, and material needs while promoting a strong culture of safety and accountability.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with TxDOT standards, policies, and performance expectations.
  • Respond to emergencies and support incident response, weather events, and other maintenance operations as needed.

Position Description

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize response of crews.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience:

5 years' experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and

Certifications:

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
