Job Summary
Library clerk who serves as the first point of contact for patrons, assists with circulation, manages library materials, and supports other library operations.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as the first point of service for patrons entering the building or calling the library for assistance, referring to other departments as necessary.
- Assist with training and supervision of part‑time library clerks.
- Act as in‑charge staff in the absence of a Clerk III.
- Charge and discharge library materials using an integrated library system, including interlibrary loans, patron holds, and partnership library reserves.
- Use software applications, shelving classifications, internet, email, spreadsheets, and radio frequency identification (RFID) to complete daily tasks.
- Input and maintain patron data in the automated circulation system.
- Issue library cards and maintain patron records.
- Handle overdue fines and lost materials, manage cash, cash register, credit card transactions, and daily deposits and monthly reports.
- Reroute circulation materials to other branches.
- Load and unload bins of library materials weighing up to 25 lb.
- Receive, sort, and process new, existing, and donated items.
- Search shelves for missing or requested items, shelve books and other library materials, and prepare items for the hold shelf.
- Receive and check in new periodicals, journals, and newspapers.
- Weed older or damaged materials.
- Attend staff meetings, staff development days, committee meetings, and training sessions.
- Perform additional duties as required, including ordering supplies, mending and cleaning books and AV items, processing invoices, creating records, changing holdings, processing mail, performing database maintenance, and participating in emergency management.
Minimum requirements:
- High school diploma or GED (some college preferred).
- At least two years of job‑related experience.
- Strong computer skills, proficient with Internet, email, Microsoft Office, and library software applications.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse public and staff.
- Ability to interpret policy, problem‑solve, and work with frequent interruptions.
- Willingness to work evening and weekend hours.
Starting hourly rate: $15.30 – $18.25, based on qualifications.
