Rhino Medical is leading the charge seeking an experienced Emergency Medicine or Family Medicine Physician for locum tenens coverage in Canadian, Texas.

This opportunity offers true rural emergency medicine within a close-knit Critical Access Hospital serving communities throughout the northeastern Texas Panhandle. Physicians practice with significant clinical autonomy, managing adult, pediatric, geriatric, and trauma presentations while supported by experienced nursing personnel, around-the-clock laboratory and imaging capabilities, and established referral pathways to regional tertiary centers.

With approximately six patient encounters daily, this is an excellent assignment for physicians who value thoughtful patient care, procedural independence, broad clinical scope, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a rural community.

Current Coverage Dates
Immediate August coverage is available for:
  • August 7
  • August 8
  • August 9
Additional as-needed scheduling opportunities may become available.
Emergency Department Profile
  • Approximately 180 patient encounters per month
  • Average daily volume of approximately six patients
  • Three Emergency Department beds
  • One designated trauma treatment space
  • Level IV Trauma Center
  • Independent physician coverage
  • Additional NP support may be added when daily volume reaches approximately 18 encounters
  • Cerner Community Works EMR
Patient Population
Physicians should be comfortable caring for a diverse rural population, including approximately:
  • 60% older adults
  • 30% pediatric patients
  • 10% trauma presentations
The clinical scope may include:
  • Adult and pediatric medical emergencies
  • Geriatric acute care
  • Trauma evaluation and stabilization
  • Respiratory and cardiac emergencies
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Laceration repair and common ED procedures
  • Resuscitation
  • Initial inpatient management
  • Coordination of higher-acuity transfers
Practice Environment
This assignment is best suited for a confident rural emergency physician who is comfortable practicing independently with limited specialty coverage immediately available onsite.
Resources include:
  • Experienced emergency nursing personnel
  • Laboratory services available 24/7
  • X-ray available 24/7
  • CT imaging onsite
  • Inpatient admission capability
  • Established transfer pathways to regional referral centers in Amarillo and Lubbock
  • Physician rounding when clinically required
  • Hospital orientation provided before independent coverage
The hospital is a longstanding regional healthcare resource offering emergency care alongside inpatient, diagnostic, rehabilitation, outpatient, and community-based services. Candidate Requirements
  • MD or DO
  • Active Texas Medical License
  • Emergency Medicine or Family Medicine background
  • Board certification preferred
  • Current ACLS
  • Current ATLS
  • Current PALS
  • Current BLS
  • Nine trauma CME hours
  • Previous Emergency Department experience
  • Strong independent clinical and procedural skills
  • No active medical-board orders
An active DEA registration with the appropriate prescribing authority is preferred.
