Primary Purpose of Position

The 4‑H Extension Agent is an employee of North Carolina State University and a professional educator. The Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating effective and comprehensive 4‑H programs that will meet the needs of the county population and support the mission of the 4‑H organization.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Direct and grow a comprehensive 4‑H professional youth development program for youth ages 5‑18.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a community‑based 4‑H program that teaches life skills via projects, special interest groups, after school and/or community clubs, and 4‑H in‑school programs.
  • Plan, promote, and attend 4‑H residential and 4‑H summer day camps and events throughout the county.
  • Provide opportunities for youth to participate in events and programs outside the county on the district, state, and/or national level.
  • Recruit, develop, and train youth and adult volunteers representative of the county population.
  • Communicate efficiently with all Extension personnel, especially 4‑H Rural Life Center staff.
  • Administer a county‑wide 4‑H advisory council composed of alumni, volunteer leaders, youth, and county leaders.
  • Raise funds in support of youth participation and volunteer development; manage grant and fee‑based programs.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with local, state, and national regulations (e.g., NC State University Programming with Minors regulations, USDA‑NIFA and IRS compliance).
Other Work/Responsibilities

Supervise the overall 4‑H program, establish and maintain clubs, recruit and train volunteers, and ensure all 4‑H and Extension procedures are followed. Additional duties may be assigned by the County Extension Director.

Travel for trainings and programs, work overnight or weekend for events, and support a total Extension program.

Requirements and Preferences

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall or 3.0 in child or youth development or a related field (minimum GPA waived for Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree).
  • Bachelor’s degree and completion of at least one‑half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in child or youth development or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in child or youth development or a related field.

Required Skills:

personal automobile, computer literacy, strong oral and written communication, ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs, teamwork, and strong organizational skills.

Preferred Attributes: self‑directed, strong work ethic, volunteer recruitment and development experience, program development skills, related Master’s degree, experience in grant writing and management.

License/Certification: Valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire; reliable, personal transportation required.

Recruitment Range: Position Open Date: 01/09/2026;
Salary range: $40,000–$50,000 depending on education (Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctorate). Internal transfer only.
