Position: ELAR 7th / 8th Grade Teacher
Location: Winters

Language Arts Teacher (7th and 8th)

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, this role develops students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The teacher fosters communication skills, cultivates an appreciation of literature, motivates students to read widely, and promotes grammar and syntax proficiency.

Essential Functions
  • Develops and administers a Language Arts curriculum consistent with district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a safe, supportive classroom environment conducive to individualized and small‑group instruction.
  • Creates lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into learning experiences to challenge students and optimize instructional time.
  • Teaches English grammar and syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, vocabulary, word usage, connotations, creative writing, independent thinking, communication, and speaking.
  • Establishes standards for critical analysis through group discussions on diverse reading materials, including mass media and literature.
  • Co‑ordinates student participation in literary publications and contests.
  • Conducts ongoing student assessment and modifies instruction to meet individual needs, including students with special needs; provides individual and small‑group instruction as required.
  • Stays familiar with district and Connecticut state standardized tests to adapt curriculum for maximum student achievement.
  • Pursues professional development through seminars, workshops, meetings, or research.
  • Maintains accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance per district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement and maintains effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures student conduct aligns with school standards and district policies, establishing a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, and supplies, maintaining inventory records.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators, as directed by the Superintendent.

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, spelling, literature, and related content areas.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action‑plan development.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.
  • Ability to use computer networks and relevant software applications.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with colleagues.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile Certification/License
  • [State] State Certification as a Language Arts Teacher, or equivalent certification required for the position.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education or a related discipline.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
Experience

Successful prior teaching experience at the appropriate grade level is preferred.
