Primary
Purpose:
Provide students assigned to the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies, behavioral accountability, and skills necessary to successfully transition back to their home campus and function productively in society.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject and level assigned
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
Knowledge of subjects assigned
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies and restorative practices
Ability to instruct students and effectively manage student behavior in a structured alternative setting
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
At least one year of student teaching or approved internship

Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles and behavioral needs.
Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the academic and behavioral needs of students assigned to DAEP.
Conduct assessment of student learning styles and academic levels and use results to plan instructional activities.
Teacher Responsibilities
Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
Work with other staff members to determine instructional goals, behavioral expectations, transition plans, and methods according to district and DAEP requirements.
Implement behavior intervention plans and restorative practices as required.
Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
Use technology to strengthen the teaching and learning process.
Student Growth and Development
Help students analyze and improve study methods, habits, decision-making skills, and behavioral choices.
Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
Support students in meeting behavioral expectations required for successful transition back to their home campus.
Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district and the goals of the DAEP program.
Classroom Management and Organization
Create a structured classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, emotional, and behavioral development of students.
Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, DAEP guidelines, and student handbook.
Implement consistent disciplinary procedures aligned with DAEP expectations.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials appropriate for the alternative education setting.
Communication
Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, home campus administrators, and teachers regarding academic progress, behavior, and transition planning.
Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Professional Growth and Development
Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills, including training related to behavior management, trauma-informed practices, and alternative education strategies.
Other
Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for DAEP teachers.
Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, behavioral documentation, and other required documents.
Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise assigned teacher aide(s).

Maintain emotional control under stress. Work in a structured alternative education environment serving students with documented behavioral infractions. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
