Special Ed Counselor/Behavior Intervention

Full-time

Primary Purpose

Conduct counseling evaluations, functional behavior assessments, provide direct special ed counseling services, develop behavior intervention plans, support classroom teachers with behavior management strategies, for special education eligible students.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification

School Counseling/LPC/LSSP- preferred

Valid Texas Teacher certification with at least 3 years experience working with special ed and/or challenging behavior-accepted

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management interventions; knowledge of counseling evaluation/services; excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Assessment:
Administer counseling evaluation and work the ARD committee to determine the need for special education counseling services. Complete Functional Behavior Assessments, and develop behavior intervention plans.

Participate in ARDs to help determine services and supports, manage related services paperwork. Work with general education and special education teachers on behavior management strategies and plans.

Consultation:
Consult with teachers and relevant staff concerning the educational needs of students, interpretation of assessment data, and implementation of behavior intervention plans in managing disruptive students. Consult with psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors, and community agencies concerning intellectual, emotional, and behavioral functioning of students as needed. Present staff development training in assigned schools to enable school personnel to identify and work more effectively with students with emotional, social, and behavioral disturbances.
