General DescriptionPlans, organizes, implements, and delivers the instructional program in the content area of assignment at the state school for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent of felony offenses, assigned to a high security correctional facility, and have a wide variety of temperaments and specialized needs. Work involves assessing students, providing individualized, competency‑based instruction, and maintaining a positive teaching/learning environment in which youth are guided and encouraged to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per work week and/or be on call.
- Plans, prepares, and delivers instructional activities that facilitate an active learning environment.
- Observes and evaluates youth’s performance and development; provides appropriate feedback on work; and encourages and monitors the progress of individual students.
- Identifies the learning needs of students and interprets assessment information; selects different instructional resources and methods to meet youths’ varying needs.
- Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities.
- Maintains accurate and complete records of youths’ progress and development; and updates all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws and agency policies.
- Provides educational services to potentially aggressive/combatting youth in a correctional setting with a wide variety of temperaments (volatile, aggressive, suicidal) and specialized needs (chemically dependent, sexual offenders).
- Treats youth with respect in all situations and has the ability to react quickly and effectively to verbally and physically defuse hazardous, combative, volatile situations on an as needed basis.
- Keeps up to date with developments in the subject area, teaching resources, and methods and makes relevant changes to instructional plans.
- Monitors outcomes for racial, ethnic, and gender disparities and takes action to address identified disparities.
- Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
- Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures: reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible; completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames.

Minimum Qualifications- Valid Secondary Texas Teacher Certification to teach Special Education (Generic Special Education High School, Secondary Generic Special Education Grades 6‑12, Special Education Early Childhood – Grade 12).
- Highly qualified to teach special education.
- Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution.
- Pre‑employment drug test, fingerprinting and criminal record check, fitness‑for‑duty assessment (physical and behavioral evaluations).
- Failure to maintain required licensure/certification will result in termination of employment.
- Obtain and maintain certification in TJJD’s Use of Force techniques, which requires physical restraint of juveniles.
