The role of Paraprofessional – ESS Moderate/Severe is to provide support to the instructional program within the assigned classroom, with responsibility for supervising, caring, and instructing special‑needs students in the regular classroom or a self‑contained classroom; assisting in implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior during non‑classroom times, providing information to appropriate school personnel, and attending IEP meetings.
Essential Functions- Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication) to meet immediate health care needs.
- Administers tests, homework, and makeup work to support teachers in the classroom.
- Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students to maintain personal hygiene.
- Attends meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, crisis prevention/intervention, professional development) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
- Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents (e.g., interpreting, home visits) to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Documents student daily activities (behavior, completed assignments, on/off‑task times) to complete daily logs and hourly activity reports.
- Evaluates situations involving other staff, students, parents, and the public to take action or provide referrals.
- Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team under teacher supervision for students with behavior disorders or other conditions.
- Maintains instructional materials and/or files to ensure availability of items and meet mandated requirements.
- Models conversation, manners, clean‑up activities, listening, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Monitors student daily schedule and behaviour plan to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Monitors students during assigned periods across various school environments (restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain safety.
- Provides instruction under teacher supervision in individual and group activities (academic subjects, reading, writing, behavioural skills, verbal skills, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce objectives, implement IEP plans, and ensure student success.
- Remains with students at all times to ensure safety, remove when necessary, and de‑escalate situations outside the classroom.
- Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks, occasionally upgrading skills to meet changing job conditions. Competencies include adherence to safety practices, operation of standard office equipment, and use of pertinent software applications; preparation and maintenance of accurate records.
Knowledge
Knowledge required includes basic math (fractions, percents, ratios), reading manuals, writing documents following prescribed formats, presenting information, and understanding complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions.
