Description

Direct and manage the instrumental music and band program at an assigned campus. Provide students with learning activities and experiences to help them grow intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially and give them an opportunity to participate in co‑curricular and extracurricular band. Enable students to develop competencies and skills as outlined by UIL/TEA.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Demonstrated competency in instrumental music
  • Current AED certificate (can be obtained once hired)

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion pedagogical techniques
  • Overall operation of an instrumental music program
  • Curriculum and instruction design
  • State and UIL policies governing band
  • Budget and personnel management
  • Instruction and student behavior management
  • Data interpretation
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Digital music composition programs

Experience

  • 2–5+ years of experience, preferably with middle and high school band students
  • Knowledge of modern teaching methodologies, music technology, instructional techniques, pedagogical principles, and advanced music theory
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Strategies

  • Direct middle school instrumental performers, including homogeneous classes, concert band, and auxiliary ensembles, and assist in high school marching band and auxiliary ensembles.
  • Establish performance and academic requirements and verify each student’s eligibility.
  • Provide band participation at extracurricular events such as concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and UIL competitions.
  • Develop and sustain recruitment strategies with music faculty on each campus through vertical alignment.
  • Support band booster club activities.
  • Create lesson plans that reflect accommodations for individual student differences and meet district curriculum program requirements.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional materials and equipment that address student learning styles and needs.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula for special education students as outlined in IEPs.
  • Collaborate with staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Use evaluative findings to determine program effectiveness and guide continuous improvements.
  • Student Growth & Development

    • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
    • Be a positive role model and support the mission of the school district.
    • Sustain recruitment strategies.

    Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create a learning environment conducive to the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student discipline following the Student Code of Conduct and handbook.
  • Accompany and supervise students during out‑of‑town trips, arranging transportation, lodging, and meals.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
  • Communication

    • Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

    Budget and Inventory

    • Develop and administer a budget based on documented program needs, ensuring cost‑effective operations.
    • Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
    • Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets, oversee cleaning, repair, and storage of instruments and equipment, and file required reports and records.

    Professional Growth and Development

    • Participate in staff development to improve job‑related skills.
    • Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
    • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, and board policies related to the band area.
