Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students’ skills and competence in various fields of science, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics, and to foster scientific methods, problem‑solving and an understanding of science applications.
Essential Functions- Teach knowledge and skills in one or more fields of science in accordance with district curriculum.
- Promote critical and creative thinking.
- Maintain a safe and conducive classroom environment for individualized and small group instruction.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; translate them into learning experiences and sequential assignments.
- Design learning activities to demonstrate the application of science to everyday life, including research projects, demonstrations, experiments, and laboratory activities.
- Instruct students in proper use and care of scientific equipment, chemicals, and plant and animal life.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning, modify instructional methods to fit students’ needs, including special needs, and provide individual or small group instruction.
- Maintain familiarity with district and state standardized tests to adapt curriculum for maximum student achievement.
- Continue to acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or research.
- Organize and maintain accurate records of grading, reporting, student activities, achievement, and attendance per district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement and communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and policies; establish behavioral standards for a functional learning atmosphere.
- Coordinate with other professional staff, participate in faculty meetings and committees.
- Select and requisition appropriate instructional supplies; maintain inventory records and ensure equipment is in working order.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- State Certification as a Science Teacher or equivalent.
- Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
- Bachelor’s degree in an accredited college or university education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level (preferred).
Travel to district buildings and professional meetings is required. Physical and mental demands include working in standard office and school environments. Standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephone will be used.
