History Teacher/Coach

This role involves developing students' knowledge of world cultures, history, geography, and socio-economic and political systems; fostering cultural understanding and critical thinking; and supporting students’ research and communication skills.

Responsibilities
  • Develops and administers Social Studies curriculum aligned with district goals and objectives.
  • Creates lesson plans and instructional materials, organizing learning around historical problems and efficient use of instructional time.
  • Teaches social studies topics including history, geography, economics, political science, government systems, education, citizenship, and humanities.
  • Develops students’ understanding of diverse racial, ethnic, religious, political groups and socio-economic factors and their impact on human rights and freedom.
  • Fosters understanding of long-term human behavior and the interrelationships of local, state, national, and global issues and approaches to solutions.
  • Demonstrates how past events inform current issues and future action, with ties to contemporary matters.
  • Develops students’ research, interpersonal, and critical-thinking skills through reading, writing, group discussions, and presentations to promote problem-solving and independent thinking.
  • Promotes critical analysis of media influence on information flow and public discourse, and encourages comparison of alternative information sources.
  • Performs ongoing assessment of student learning; adapts instructional methods to meet individual needs, including students with special needs; provides individual and small-group instruction as needed.
  • Continues professional development through seminars, workshops, meetings, or research.
  • Maintains accurate records of student activities, achievement, and attendance according to district procedures and laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement and communicates effectively with students and parents.
  • Maintains classroom standards of conduct and a positive learning environment; coordinates with colleagues and participates in faculty activities.
  • Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and supplies; maintains inventory records.
Additional Duties
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and designated by central office administrators.

Travel Requirements
  • Travels to district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and pedagogy; ability to differentiate instruction by student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of world history and related sub-topics (history, geography, sociology, economics, political science, government, education, citizenship, anthropology, humanities).
  • Knowledge of major historical problems and approaches to solutions.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action planning.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.
  • Ability to use computer networks and software applications; organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents; engage in self-evaluation for growth; establish cooperative working relationships.

Qualifications Profile
  • Certification/License:
    Texas Certification as a Social Studies Teacher;
    Motor Vehicle Operator's License (CDL preferred) or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Education:

    Bachelors degree in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Experience:

    Successful prior teaching experience at the appropriate grade level is preferred.
