District Primary Purpose

Assist and promote La Joya ISD in implementing a rigorous curriculum/instructional program that supports student success and achievement.

Department Primary Purpose

The teacher’s primary responsibility is to plan and implement an individualized educational program designed to assist students in areas of difficulty to facilitate academic, social, and emotional growth.

Qualifications

  • Valid Teacher’s Certificate
  • Special Education certification and/or endorsement
  • ESL Endorsement and/or Bilingual Supplemental
  • Content Area Endorsement
Experience/Knowledge
  • Apply knowledge of subject matter and current educational and instructional theories, research‑based interventions, methodologies, techniques, and principles.
  • Knowledge of State, Local, and Federal laws and regulations affecting students receiving special education services.
  • Professional attitude, appearance, and excellent communication skills; ability to develop positive rapport with staff, students, and parents/guardians.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Plan lessons, activities and technology integration in accordance with grade‑level TEKS and ISD Curriculum Timelines.
  • Provide instruction to individuals, small groups, or whole class using differentiated instruction and various instructional methods.
  • Identify student learning styles and modify curriculum and teaching strategies accordingly.
  • Evaluate students per ISD Special Education Department Policies & Procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records (grades, attendance, progress reports, ARD paperwork, student modifications/accommodations, etc.).
  • Perform all duties related to instructional delivery area (content mastery, resource, inclusion).
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as specified in IEP.
  • Collaborate with campus, special education staff, and related service providers to develop and implement Individual Education Plans with measurable goals.
  • Consult classroom teachers on behavior management per IEP; intervene in crises using proactive strategies, district‑approved de‑escalation, and safe physical restraints (e.g., CPI).
  • Maintain contact with parents regarding student performance through conferences, progress reports, letters, and ARD meetings.
  • Provide technical guidance on special education laws and local policies to general education teachers and less‑experienced special education staff.
  • Plan, develop and conduct Annual ARDs to ensure compliance with timelines.
  • Comply with all Federal, State, District, and School regulations for special education teachers.
  • Notify supervisors when related services are not being provided as prescribed in IEPs.
  • Engage in professional development (classes, conferences, seminars, workshops, journals, staff development).
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal or Special Education Director.

:
Occasional prolonged hours; stooping, lifting, restraining students; rare exposure to bacteria, bodily fluids, communicable diseases.
