Job Summary

In the general supervision of the Middle School Principal, the Theatre Teacher designs and implements learning activities that foster intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth within the IB framework. Responsibilities include directing, acting, designing sets, creating production timelines, and supporting student MYP Personal Projects.

Core Responsibilities
  • Deliver inclusive instruction aligned with IB Middle Years Programme standards, practices, and philosophy.
  • Instruct middle and high school theatre classes with enthusiasm and sensitivity to diverse learning styles.
  • Direct and execute two dramatic performances each school year, coordinating rehearsals, productions, and performances.
  • Maintain current inventory of all program assets and manage fixed assets related to theatre.
  • Develop and align clear, appropriate lessons with the IB planner, ensuring constructivist and inquiry-based pedagogy.
  • Differentiated instruction to achieve depth of learning for all students.
  • Assess students through formative and summative tools, using data to improve learning.
  • Establish classroom standards of behavior and manage classroom behavior, including disciplinary actions in line with the Academy Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain up-to-date planners in Manage Bac and record student reports and grades.
  • Mentor students engaged in the MYP Personal Project as requested by the programme coordinator.
  • Facilitate theatre enrichment opportunities and pursue extracurricular performances for students.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, students, and campus personnel, maintaining professional relationships.
  • Collaboration with IB coordinators to produce supplemental teaching and learning materials and design unit planners.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and staff committees as required.
  • Assist in proctoring examinations, educational visits, and support the Westlake Academy House system.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Middle School Principal or Head of School.
Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university; graduate degree preferred.
  • Valid Texas Teacher Certification in Theatre preferred; non‑certified candidates must obtain certification within one year of hire to remain employed.
  • Demonstrated competency in directing, acting, set design, and production timelines.
  • Experience in IB curriculum and instruction desirable.
  • Successful completion of state-required fingerprinting and criminal background check.
  • Legal eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Two or more years of experience in an educational or IB environment desirable.
  • Knowledge of curriculum design and IB standards; familiarity with core academic subjects and online learning best practices.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students, employees, volunteers, and school operations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and accept constructive feedback professionally.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement of teaching methods and interdisciplinary knowledge.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Frequent standing, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Frequent walking; repetitive hand motions, keyboarding, mouse use.
  • Regular moderate lifting and carrying of 15–44 lbs.; lifting of theatre equipment may be required.
  • Work inside with occasional outside duties; maintain emotional control under stress and be prepared for prolonged or irregular hours.
