Secondary Math Teacher

Provide students in grades 6–12 with instruction in mathematics that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills necessary for academic and real-world success. Implement engaging and standards-based instruction aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), preparing students for state assessments, college, and career pathways.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate for one or more of the following:
    • Mathematics Grades 4–8
    • Mathematics Grades 7–12
    • Mathematics Grades 6–12 (legacy certification)
    • Mathematics/Physical Science/Engineering (MPSE) 6–12
    • ESL Supplemental certification preferred (may be required based on campus/student needs)

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Knowledge of mathematics TEKS for middle and high school courses
  • Understanding of curriculum design and differentiation in math instruction
  • Proficiency in math-specific tools, manipulatives, and technology (e.g., graphing calculators, Desmos, Geo Gebra)
  • Strong ability to explain abstract concepts and build conceptual understanding
  • Effective classroom management and instructional planning
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

  • At least one year of student teaching or approved internship in secondary mathematics preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Strategies:

  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based math instruction in courses ranging from Grade 6 Math through Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and College Readiness Math.
  • Scaffold instruction to support students' mastery of foundational and advanced mathematical concepts.
  • Utilize manipulatives, models, and real-world problem-solving to support conceptual learning.
  • Incorporate technology into lessons to promote interactivity, modeling, and exploration of math concepts.
  • Collaborate with math department and vertical teams to ensure alignment and continuity of instruction across grade levels.
  • Prepare students for STAAR, EOC, and other relevant assessments using data-driven instructional practices.
  • Student Growth and Development:

  • Assess and monitor student progress regularly using formative and summative data.
  • Provide differentiated support, intervention, and enrichment based on individual student needs.
  • Encourage critical thinking, perseverance, and a growth mindset in mathematics.
  • Promote academic confidence and provide a safe space for students to take risks and learn from mistakes.
  • Classroom Management and Organization:

  • Create a respectful, organized, and engaging learning environment conducive to student learning.
  • Establish and maintain clear behavior expectations in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and communication.
  • Ensure all equipment and resources are used appropriately and effectively.
  • Communication:

  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians about student progress and classroom expectations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, specialists, and administrators to support student achievement.
  • Participate in ARD meetings, student support teams, and interventions as necessary.
  • Provide clear and timely feedback to students to promote ongoing academic growth.
  • Professional Growth and Development:

  • Participate in campus and district professional development, particularly in areas related to math instruction and data analysis.
  • Stay current with trends, research, and best practices in mathematics education.
  • Maintain compliance with district and TEA policies related to certification, curriculum, and documentation.
  • Engage in continuous reflection and seek feedback to improve instructional effectiveness.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Supervise assigned paraprofessionals, student aides, and volunteers as applicable

    Working Conditions:

    Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
    Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, walking, and lifting of instructional materials and equipment. Occasional extended hours may be required for tutoring, grading, or extracurricular events.
