Position: Academic Advisor I
Location: Commerce

Overview

Academic Advisor I works in the Academic Affairs Student Success office at East Texas A&M University located in Commerce, Texas. Under general supervision the advisor recruits and advises undergraduate students regarding their career goals, academic requirements, schedule planning, and utilization of university resources.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides academic advice and guidance to students on degree programs, academic and course schedules, and course planning; assists with adds, drops, withdrawals, and curriculum changes.
  • Monitors student progress and verifies completion of degree requirements; reviews academic records and test scores for course recommendations.
  • Refers students to resources related to admissions, re‑admission, professional concerns, housing, financial aid, student services, academic preparation, time management, test anxiety, and study skills.
  • Responds to inquiries from students and parents; serves as liaison between colleges and other university offices regarding admissions, registration, degree audits, advising, and counseling.
  • Meets with freshman and transfer students during orientation; directs students to appropriate departments for financial aid, billing, housing, textbooks, and healthcare; assists with family visits, group tours, and presentations to visiting groups.
  • Provides prospective students with information on admissions, programs, faculty contact details, and state and university program requirements.
  • Develops positive relationships with deans, faculty, staff, and university departments; provides leadership for faculty advisors and develops training materials on academic advising.
  • Participates in system, college, and department events such as orientation, career fairs, workshops, trainings, and seminars; assists with coordination of special on‑campus initiatives.
  • Makes and maintains records of student contacts; prepares various academic and advising reports.
  • Serves as an advisory role in the development and revision of curriculum and degree plans; serves on committee(s) and provides input on scholarship applications.
Minimum Requirements
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.
  • Experience:

    Zero years of related experience in advising and recruiting.
  • Skills:

    Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications; familiarity with student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits; excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Abilities:
    Ability to multitask, work cooperatively with others, present information clearly, handle sensitive information with confidentiality, work beyond normal office hours or on weekends, and travel.
  • Licensing:
    Valid driver’s license.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Ability to move light objects.
  • Other:
    None.
Preferred Education / Skills / Experience
  • Master’s degree.
  • Bilingual Spanish proficiency.
