High School Art Teacher

Provide students with engaging, standards-based visual arts instruction that develops artistic skills, creativity, critical thinking, self-expression, and appreciation of the arts. Plan and facilitate learning experiences in a variety of artistic media and techniques while maintaining a safe, organized, and supportive studio environment. Enable students to develop the knowledge and competencies necessary for academic, personal, and social growth.

Education/Certification
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with the required art endorsement or certification
  • Related training and work experience that meet certification waiver requirements under the district's District of Innovation Plan, when applicable
  • Demonstrated competency in visual arts and the assigned subject area
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of visual arts curriculum, techniques, media, and instructional practices
  • Knowledge of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for visual arts
  • Ability to teach a variety of art courses, techniques, and media
  • Ability to develop students' artistic skills, creativity, visual literacy, and critical-thinking abilities
  • Knowledge of safe practices for using, storing, and disposing of art materials, tools, equipment, and chemicals
  • Ability to instruct students and manage student behavior in a classroom and studio environment
  • Ability to organize student artwork, exhibitions, competitions, and art-related activities
  • Strong organizational, communication, technology, and interpersonal skills
Experience

Student teaching, an approved internship, or related visual arts teaching or professional work experience

Instructional Strategies
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's visual arts curriculum and provide written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Design lessons that address individual student differences and provide appropriate accommodations, modifications, and extensions.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, equipment, artistic media, and technology that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students.
  • Present visual arts content in accordance with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, district curriculum, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Provide instruction in artistic concepts and processes, which may include drawing, painting, design, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, digital art, photography, art history, and other assigned visual arts courses.
  • Teach students to analyze, interpret, evaluate, and discuss works of art using appropriate artistic vocabulary and critical-response methods.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques for using art tools, equipment, media, and materials.
  • Integrate art history, culture, aesthetics, technology, and contemporary artistic practices into classroom instruction.
  • Provide opportunities for students to create original artwork, develop portfolios, display their work, and participate in appropriate exhibitions or competitions.
  • Assess students' learning styles, interests, artistic abilities, and instructional needs and use the results to plan instructional activities.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers and other support personnel to modify curriculum and instruction according to students' Individualized Education Programs, Section 504 plans, and other instructional plans.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to determine instructional goals, objectives, methods, and interdisciplinary learning opportunities according to district requirements.
  • Plan and assign work to instructional aides and volunteers and oversee the completion of assigned responsibilities.
  • Student Growth and Development
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through projects, portfolios, critiques, exhibitions, written assignments, formal assessments, and informal observations.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback that supports students' artistic growth, craftsmanship, creativity, and understanding of visual arts concepts.
