Primary

Purpose:

The Interpreter provides interpreting services for hearing impaired students in a variety of educational settings. This individual works as part of a collaborative team to facilitate communication and support for students with hearing impairments.

Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma or GED
  • Valid certification as interpreter granted by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  • Knowledge of interpreter role and R.I.D. Code of Professional Conduct
  • Experience working with individuals with varied language abilities
  • An understanding of Deaf culture and the Deaf community
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and support staff
  • Some experience working in a public school setting
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Support

  • Interpret in educational settings including classrooms, co-curricular activities, school-related programs and meetings, conferences, staff development, and other situations.
  • Attend and interpret Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings as needed.
  • Help maintain administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Student Management

  • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s communication needs.
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs and provide consultation regarding communication strategies and accessibility needs.

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Participate in professional development programs and special events as assigned.

    None

    Physical and Mental Demands
    • Tools/Equipment:
      Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
    • Posture:
      May require standing, moving, or positioning for extended periods.
    • Motion:
      Ability to use hands and arms for extended periods for signing.
    • Lifting:
      Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 10 pounds).
    • Environment:
      Schedule may include evenings or extracurricular activities as needed.
    • Mental Demands:
      Ability to attend and actively engage for prolonged periods.
