Primary PurposeIn the absence of the regular classroom teacher or instructional aide, provide appropriate learning activities, experiences, and classroom management to support students in achieving their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills necessary for success.
QualificationsEducation/Certification/Other Requirements:
- High school diploma required
- Texas teaching certificate preferred
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
- Knowledge of subject area(s) assigned
- Ability to maintain effective classroom management
- Ability to instruct students
- Knowledge of child growth and development
- Ability to follow oral and written directions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff
Experience/Other Requirements:
- Must pass a fingerprint-based background check
- Must be 18 years old for elementary assignments
- Must be 21 years old for secondary assignments
- Must attend substitute orientation
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required
- Follow established substitute arrival and dismissal protocols.
- Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times and locations.
- Follow daily lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher or designee.
- Present subject matter in accordance with Texas Education Agency guidelines, board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Serve as a positive role model supporting the mission of the district.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to student maturity levels.
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability throughout the school day.
- Implement the classroom discipline management plan in accordance with board policies and teacher instructions.
- Protect and respect student confidentiality.
- Encourage appropriate student behavior and engagement.
- Take reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Manage instructional time effectively to maximize student learning.
- Dismiss students according to campus procedures.
- Provide appropriate feedback on student progress when applicable.
- Immediately report injuries, illnesses, or significant disciplinary concerns to campus administration.
- Document lessons presented and activities completed for the regular teacher.
- Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible conduct.
- Promote the district positively within the school and community.
- Comply with state, district, and campus policies and regulations.

Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental FactorsThe ability to move throughout the building and/or district is required. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, and lifting up to approximately 30 pounds; occasional lifting of equipment and materials up to 40 pounds may be required depending on assignment. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Maintain emotional control under stress.
