English as a Second Language Teacher - Middle School Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, provide identified, beginner, and intermediate English Learners (ELs) with focused, targeted, and systematic second language acquisition instruction that provides them with the foundation of English language vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and English mechanics necessary as well as the knowledge and skills outlined in the state standards for English Language Arts and Reading. Support campus-wide systems that ensure English Learners' cognitive, linguistic, and affective development designed to fulfill their maximum potential and prepare them for success in higher education and society.

Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for English Learners; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Essential Functions
  • Develops and administers school curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
  • Create focused, targeted, and systematic second language acquisition instruction to provide the student a foundation of English language vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and mechanics necessary to support content-based instruction and accelerated learning of English.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to determine instructional goals, accommodations, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Collaborate with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students identified in Individual Education Plans.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, documentation of compliance, and language progress monitoring.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with District testing programs.
  • Support teachers in learning and implementing instructional accommodations for Emergent Bilingual students and socio-cultural competence.
  • Assist in coordinating events that foster awareness of multiculturalism and resources in the school and surrounding community for our students and their families.
  • Assist in ensuring that new Emergent Bilingual students to the campus are properly identified and scheduled and monitor the progress of Emergent Bilingual students who are not obtaining passing grades.
  • Support Emergent Bilingual students in core content classes when needed.
  • Attend ARD meetings.
  • Manage the LPAC for identified Emergent Bilingual students to include:
    • Facilitate LPAC meetings, ensure compliance based on state standards, assist with campus compliance training, monitor student progress, assist with TELPAS and other required state tests, provide instructional recommendations, and maintain all meeting records using district adopted software, PEIMS, and other required documentation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.
