The Texas Department of Transportation’s Waco District is seeking a dynamic and experienced engineering leader to serve as Deputy District Engineer. As Deputy DE, you’ll be at the forefront of delivering major infrastructure projects, guiding district strategy, and collaborating closely with public officials at all levels—local, state, and federal.
Salary: $135,577 – $229,295 per year (B32).
Location:
Waco District Headquarters, 100 South Loop Drive, Waco, TX .
Travel:
Yes, 25% of the time.
Shift: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

- Assist in management and engineering oversight of all activities in a geographically specific area in Texas (district), including transportation planning, operations, right‑of‑way acquisition, engineering design, construction, inspection and maintenance of highways and bridges, environmental functions, general aviation airports, public transit systems, state park roads and other state agency facilities, and associated administrative and support activities.
- Act as consultant to other staff members on administration, programming, planning, construction design, environmental, maintenance, traffic, and right‑of‑way functions.
- Assist in the development of work programs to meet transportation needs within the district including transportation planning, design, environmental, construction, maintenance, and traffic control requirements.
- Assist with engineering or problem resolution encountered in transportation planning/location, design, construction, operation/maintenance of bridges, aviation airports, public transit systems, state park roads and other state agency infrastructure.
- Assist the District Engineer in maintaining an effective and coordinated operation of the district and make individual and public contacts in the interest of the department.
- May direct and oversee district safety and legal office activities.
- Supervise professionals in specific district functional areas of responsibility.
- Oversee all district activities in the absence of the District Engineer.
- Perform other job‑related responsibilities as assigned.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science; a bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS. Related graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
- Experience:
- Five (5) years of transportation engineering as a Licensed Professional Engineer (LPE) in planning, location, design, construction, operation and maintenance (full‑time or prorated part‑time). Must have four (4) years of managerial/supervisory experience.
- Licenses and
Certifications: - Valid driver’s license; this position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (in any state; must obtain Texas license within 6 months if currently not licensed in Texas).
- Transportation design engineering principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory.
- Construction engineering policies and procedures.
- Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements.
- Government programs and operations affecting highway and transportation development.
- Economic, demographics, fiscal, legal, and technical aspects involving state transportation programs.
- Ability to establish plans and set objectives and goals that support overall business strategy/results; anticipate and adjust for problems and roadblocks.
- Experience supervising technical staff.
- Skills in public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.
- Strong communication skills to convey complex ideas and information clearly, concisely, and effectively.
