Position Summary
The Sustainability Specialist will have a strong interest in environmental sustainability and a desire to achieve sustainability goals. As a Sustainability Specialist, you will support and continually improve our Environmental and Energy Management Systems. You'll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to identify sustainability risks and opportunities, lead initiatives, support compliance needs, and drive measurable performance improvements. This role will work closely with safety team members, operations management, production management, engineering teams, sustainability team members, and outside organizations as needed.
This role is expected to support shared program coordination, tracking, and reporting activities across the training and sustainability program.
Position Responsibilities
The incumbent is expected to perform the following functions that the company has determined are essential to this position:
- Coordinate and manage sustainability data collection, consolidation, and analysis, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, to support tracking, reporting, and business decisions.
- Support execution of sustainability strategies and key initiatives, including energy efficiency, circularity, and resource reduction efforts.
- Lead and support Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) data collection and related execution activities.
- Prepare accurate and timely sustainability reports, data summaries, KPIs, and supporting documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- Support certifications, audits, and compliance-related initiatives, including ISO, OCS, and other environmental or energy management system requirements.
- Coordinate with facilities, consultants, and internal stakeholders to track project deliverables, timelines, and follow-up actions.
- Develop and improve processes for organizing, validating, and maintaining sustainability-related data and metrics.
- Present sustainability data, KPIs, initiatives, and project updates to internal stakeholders as needed.
- Track facility-level sustainability performance measures and support follow-up actions to ensure progress toward goals.
- Manage data validation, documentation, and quality control for sustainability and shared program metrics.
- Develop strong working knowledge of available data sources and how to interpret sustainability-related information to support decision-making.
- Perform additional analysis, reporting, and related duties as assigned.
Essential
Skills and Experience:
- Basic understanding of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies and related tools.
- Foundational knowledge of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and sustainability reporting principles.
- Knowledge of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
- General understanding of environmental impacts, risk severity, and mitigation methods.
- Data-driven mindset with the ability to analyze information and support priorities with facts.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in sustainability, ESG, environmental compliance, or a related role; experience in an automotive manufacturing environment preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Bachelor's Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Sciences, Environmental/Industrial/Civil Engineering or related field required.
- Master's degree in sustainability, environmental science, ESG or related field preferred.
- Sustainability-related certification preferred, such as LEED, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), or similar credentials preferred.
