Job Description
Safety Officer I, II or III – Yoakum District Headquarters (2601401). TxDOT’s Yoakum District is looking for an individual who has a passion for safety to help lead its safety program. The position will be based at the District Headquarters in Yoakum and will report to the District Engineer. Responsibilities include a combination of field work, safety presentations, and administrative tasks.
Travel consists primarily of day trips within our 11‑county district to visit field offices and work zones.
- Safety Officer I (B17): $42,976 – $64,469
- Safety Officer II (B19): $48,244 – $76,028
- Safety Officer III (B21): $54,278 – $87,046
Salary level is determined by experience, education, skill level and business needs.

Safety Officer I Responsibilities- Coordinate safety meetings, including planning, conducting, scheduling and providing literature and audio‑visual material.
- Inspect equipment and work areas.
- Investigate employee accidents, prepare reports, maintain records, identify injury types and accident causes, recommend preventative actions and conduct follow‑up investigations.
- Monitor workers' compensation records.
- Plan, schedule and assist with administering training on safety issues including defensive driving, CPR, first‑aid, fleet safety and hazardous materials; maintain applicable training records.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
In addition to the above:
- Process damage property claims and/or assist with tort claims and open record requests.
- Monitor compliance with material safety data sheet (MSDS) requirements and recommend updates for Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan.
- Answer safety‑related inquiries and complaints from the public.
- Perform industrial hygiene testing of departmental operations to ensure compliance with safety and hazardous materials regulations and minimize employee health risks and exposures.
In addition to the above:
- Maintain a comprehensive written hazard communication program for the district; develop local policies, procedures, guidelines and rule interpretations to comply with federal, state and local rules and regulations.
- Administer the new employee driver’s orientation program and the vehicle safety program.
