Job Summary
The Resource Specialist I supports wildfire prevention and emergency response activities in Fort Stockton, Texas, and statewide. Responsibilities include firefighting, program delivery, equipment maintenance, data collection, and credit card management for the Texas A&M Forest Service (TAMFS).
Responsibilities- Serve as a wildland firefighter and emergency responder statewide; operate heavy firefighting equipment, use hand tools, conduct ground reconnaissance.
- Maintain physical fitness standard: 2‑mile walk carrying a 25‑lb pack in 30 minutes or less; meet required NWCG training and Red Card Certification.
- Respond to dispatcher within 30 minutes of an emergency page, notification, or alert; carry a communication device for 24‑hour availability.
- Assist the Regional Fire Coordinator with the delivery of Capacity Building programs to volunteer fire departments (VFDs) and municipal fire departments.
- Support program delivery by the Regional Fire Coordinators, Fire Prevention Specialists, Urban Interface Specialists, and Prescribed Burning Specialist.
- Support the Fire Risk Assessment Coordinator with data collection.
- Maintain assigned state vehicle, mobile dozers, and other emergency equipment in readiness.
- Provide support for Fire Emergency Response and Forest Natural Resource programs as requested by TAMFS.
- Manage and account for TAMFS credit cards according to applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
- Serve on Incident Management Team, Fire Prevention Teams, and Wildland Urban Interface Mitigation Teams (time dependent on fire season severity).
- Within 90 days of hire establish a primary residency within 30‑minute travel time of the home base.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Work may involve exposure to harsh weather, long walks, standing, bending, lifting heavy objects, driving long distances, and extended computer use.
Qualifications and Experience- High school graduate or equivalent (required).
- Graduate with a 2‑year natural resources‑related technical degree (preferred).
- One or more years of general work experience (required).
- One or more years of experience with a VFD, municipal fire department, wildland fire agency, or wildland fire suppression (preferred).
- Instructor experience (preferred).
- Commercial driver's license or ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire (required).
- NWCG firefighter and prevention training or equivalent; FFT‑1, TPL‑1, Dozer Operator, TCFP, or SFFMA Basic Firefighter or higher certification (preferred).
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of water delivery systems and PC-based programs/software (required).
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others (required).
- Ability to utilize GIS/GPS programs, wildland fire hand tools, personal protective equipment, and wildland fire engines (preferred).
- Required:
2‑mile walk carrying a 25‑lb pack in 30 minutes or less. - Preferred: 3‑mile walk wearing a 45‑lb pack in 45 minutes or less.
