Location: Mont Belvieu

The City of Mont Belvieu, Texas is currently accepting applications for a Permit Technician in the Planning & Development Department. The City of Mont Belvieu is a growing community located on IH-10 east of Houston, Texas in Chambers County.

Position summary:

This position is responsible for customer service related to permits, plans, and application activities in the Planning and Development department; and performs related duties as assigned.

Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Greets walk-in customers, receives information request calls, directs callers and/or provides accurate information to customers;
  • Responds both orally and in writing to inquiries received at the Permit office and by phone from builders, engineers, contractors, architects and the general public concerning submittal requirements, permit and construction regulations, departmental policies, complaints, and requests for service; refers difficult problems to higher‑level staff, as needed;
  • Ensure timely processing of plans, permits and applications: manage and coordinate the routing and tracking of plans to various departments and outside agencies for required reviews and clearance; perform follow‑up phone calls to ensure timeliness of response from other departments and agencies.
  • Ensures that all permit fees are paid, or deferred and appropriately documented;
  • Issues applicable permits at the conclusion of the plan review process;
  • Prepares and maintains various spreadsheets and routine reports; assists with purchasing activities;
  • Operates a desktop computer using a variety of office business applications, My Permit now system and My Government Online, Incode and standard office equipment, as required;
  • During emergency conditions, all City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
  • Contractor Registration being able to look up various licensing information for Contractors and Engineer
  • Performs any and all other related duties or assignments as assigned.

Required education and experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver License.
  • Successful candidates must pass pre-employment drug screen, job related physical and background and motor vehicle check.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions will be considered when hiring for this role.

Preferred education and experience:
  • Candidate must have some construction background or have experience with permitting
  • Candidate must be able to obtain a Permit Technician certification within one year of the date of hire

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
