Job Summary

Provides direction for operational and technical aspects for the Surgical Services department, and other applicable procedural areas. Responsible for budget preparation, long range planning, quality activities, performance improvement and regulatory compliance.

Leading a team of nearly 600 personnel, the Director of Surgical Services is responsible for Perioperative and Surgical teams on the campus of Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Key Position Details

This is a full-time onsite position reporting to Abbott Northwestern Hospital with occasional weekend rotations.

Job Description Principle Responsibilities
  • Strategy and Growth
    • Designs and implements strategies and initiatives to achieve operational goals and objectives
    • Aligns programs and services with the organization’s mission, vision, values and strategies
    • Partners with physician leaders to assure clinical, financial and operational excellence and growth
    • Oversees the implementation of systems and processes to improve operational efficiency and consistency
    • Analyzes surgical data and identifies opportunities for improvement
    • Partners with physicians and other leadership as needed to establish, plan and execute strategic initiatives
  • Leadership of staff
    • Provides overall program/service direction through development of goals
    • Demonstrates program management through measurable clinical outcomes, business plan targets, department budgets and goal achievement
    • Designs work processes and directs work performance to be in compliance with rules, regulations, accreditation standards
    • Creates a clear patient-centered vision and direction for departments and areas of responsibility
    • Ensures evidence based systems and processes are present to support best practice outcomes for care delivery/care coordination
    • Collaborates with other disciplines in the design, planning, implementation, evaluation and achievement of system patient care outcomes and service/program goals
    • Negotiates change and implements process improvement
  • Department operations
    • Ensures human, space, material and financial resources are acquired and allocated for specific patient care function and process
    • Ensures quality care and service delivery across areas of responsibility
    • Directs skill mix analysis of patient care teams to ensure safe and effective care
    • Identifies strategies to increase volume growth and associated revenues
    • Ensures achievement of productivity targets
    • Identifies capital needs and allocation of resources
    • Responsible for management of information: acquires, updates, and reconciles data to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and standards
    • Identifies new business opportunities and implements them
    • Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required
  • Master's degree in nursing, health care administration, business administration, or related field required
  • 5+ years in patient care experience required
  • 5+ years progressive leadership experience within the Acute Hospital setting required
  • Procedural experience required
  • Surgical Services Leadership experience strongly preferred
  • Licensed Registered Nurse - MN Board of Nursing preferred

Pay Range
