The Radiation Therapist provides safe, accurate, and compassionate radiation therapy services in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist and under the general supervision of the Medical Physicist. The position maintains clinical and technical competency, accurate treatment documentation, compliance with departmental procedures, and a high standard of patient-centered care.
Essential Functions- Patient Treatment and Clinical Care
- Deliver prescribed courses of radiation therapy accurately and with minimal supervision, following the Radiation Oncologist’s prescription, approved treatment plan, and departmental protocols.
- Confirm patient identity, diagnosis, treatment site, prescription, calculations, and required approvals before treatment.
- Prepare the treatment room and equipment based on physician and treatment‑planning instructions, including immobilization devices, field size, treatment distance, positioning, and accessories.
- Transfer and position patients safely on the treatment couch, providing special assistance for patients using stretchers, wheelchairs, intravenous therapy, or other supportive devices.
- Ensure proper radiation dose delivery and daily recording of treatment.
- Acquire and review treatment images according to departmental standards and elevate discrepancies before proceeding.
- Observe patients for unusual reactions or changes in condition and promptly report concerns to Nursing, the Radiation Oncologist, or other appropriate clinical staff.
- Provide clear explanations of procedures, reinforce education regarding side effects and general care, and confirm patient understanding.
- Maintain visual and auditory contact with the patient during treatment and respond appropriately to emergencies.
- Simulation, Documentation, and Workflow
- Perform CT simulation and clinical setup activities within the therapist’s scope of practice.
- Document all simulation and treatment parameters accurately in ARIA or the designated oncology information system.
- Maintain complete treatment charts, patient markings, approvals, and supporting documentation.
- Assist with patient scheduling and coordinate treatment appointments to support timely care.
- Perform weekly chart checks as assigned to verify treatment documentation, billing accuracy, and appropriate CPT capture.
- Maintain clean, organized treatment, simulation, console, and patient changing areas.
- Equipment, Quality, and Safety
- Perform required equipment warm‑up, daily output checks, and assigned daily or weekly quality assurance activities for treatment and simulation equipment.
- Report equipment malfunction, service needs, treatment discrepancies, or safety concerns immediately to the Chief Radiation Therapist, Medical Physicist, or appropriate leader.
- Coordinate service access with engineers or vendor representatives as directed and document service‑related issues appropriately.
- Handle equipment carefully and support preventive maintenance, repair, and safety processes.
- Maintain radiation exposure within applicable limits and follow ALARA principles, department safety procedures, and state reporting requirements.
- Review and sign required radiation safety documentation and participate in drills, audits, and corrective actions.
- Follow UCNT/CCNT policies, Behavioral Expectations, Customer Service Standards, HIPAA requirements, infection‑control practices, and all applicable laws and regulations.
- Maintain current licensure, registration, certification, and continuing education.
- Demonstrate respect, professionalism, adaptability, teamwork, and effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Radiation Oncologist, Medical Physicist, Chief Radiation Therapist, or organizational leadership.
