Job Description

The Intern, Interpreting functions as an entry-level professional interpreter for students, faculty, staff and administration thatare Deaf/Hard of Hearing in order to maintain institutional compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Interpreting Interns strive to advance in sign language skill proficiency in order toprovide high quality interpreting services. Interpreting Interns support and promote all persons’ right to communication equity in learning and workplace environments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provides Sign Language interpretation (voice and signing) and related Sign Language formats:

for clients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
in various Lone Star College locations and settings
at the appropriate language and register level

Analyzes source language content, meaning, and intent to accurately deliver information to the target audience

Communicates client information, client status, and any concerns or challenges to supervisor

Actively researches situations involving new, technical, orcomplex information to gain an understanding of what will/may be interpreted

Commitment to accepted courses or assignments for the duration of the semester.

Ethically models positive and inclusive behavior

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Basic fluency in both Sign Language and English with the ability to have a grasp of both the source and the target languages.
Knowledge of the structure and content of Sign Language and English, including the meaning and spelling of words and an understanding of the rules of composition and grammar
Ability to understand and adhere to LSC Policy on Students with Disability Rights, FERPA rules of the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, and other related federal, state, and local regulations
Knowledge of the Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct asadopted by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission
Basic knowledge of the Deaf culture and the Deaf community
Ability to maintain a professional and friendly attitude and toquickly develop a rapport with a wide variety of people
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
