- Must be knowledgeable in operation and maintenance requirements of heavy‑duty construction equipment, light‑duty equipment, diesel and gasoline motors, and engines.
- Must be able to maintain and use hand and power tools, including automotive servicing equipment.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
- Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is a plus.
- Perform preventative/routine maintenance work on equipment as required, including bulldozers, cranes, and graders.
- Assist in making decisions on all normal and minor repairs and report major problems to Mechanic Supervisor.
- Use visual and auditory cues, computerized and other testing and measuring devices, tools, and equipment to identify, diagnose, and locate faults or malfunctions to effect repairs.
- Maintain and service attachments and working tools such as blades, plows, winches, side booms, hammers, lifting attachments, and crushing buckets.
- Repair and adjust hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and load packers on heavy haul trucks, dump trucks, and trailers.
- Inspect, adjust, and repair gasoline and diesel tractors, power units, hydraulic and cable‑operated attachments on tractors, hydraulic systems, injection valves and systems, moldboards, and scarifiers on road graders.
- Repair and maintain trenching machines and set proper grade.
- Test repaired equipment to ensure proper function, ensuring work meets manufacturers' specifications.
- Routinely inspect equipment and vehicles on the yard and at the job site to ensure safety devices are present and operational, tires are properly inflated and in good repair, and testing for proper function.
- Ensure work performed meets DOT and/or other regulatory department standards.
- Set up and operate working tools, such as lathe, drill press, or grinder, to make or repair parts.
- Notify the supervisor and address potential safety hazards in a timely fashion.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, tools, and equipment.
- Follow all company policies and procedures and obtain certifications at company/client request, including but not limited to BBP, Onsite Orientation, First Aid, CPR, Annual OSHA Training, PEC, H2S, Operator Evaluation, LO/TO, HAZCOM, Environmental Awareness.
