Overview

Join the Texas Department of Transportation and help keep the highways of Far West Texas running strong. We are looking for a dedicated and hands-on leader to serve as Maintenance Section Supervisor III for the Sierra Blanca and Van Horn maintenance offices based in Van Horn, TX. In this role, you will lead a skilled team to maintain, repair, and improve the transportation network, ensuring safety and reliability for all travelers in this rugged and beautiful corner of the state.

This position oversees a maintenance section and is responsible for providing a safe driving thoroughfare within Van Horn, Sierra Blanca, and other communities in Hudspeth and Culberson Counties through the maintenance of all roads, structures, and rights-of-way. Supervises 20+ technical and clerical employees, including a subsection yard and office in Sierra Blanca, Texas.

Salary range:
Maintenance Section Supervisor III – B26 – $76,530.00 – $

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 9 years in roadway maintenance or construction-related work (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
  • 3 years supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license at time of application (state vehicle operation).
  • Commercial Class A Driver's License at time of application.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CDL driver’s license with Hazmat Endorsement.

Responsibilities
  • Administers and inspects contracted maintenance activities.
  • Inspects road conditions, work in progress, and work completed by crews and contractors.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements emergency response to inclement weather, flooding, accidents, and hazardous material spills affecting area roadways.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates work project needs with the Area Engineer and district staff on a regular basis.
  • Prepares and monitors the budget.
  • Prioritizes and assigns projects; guides the maintenance section team in planning and scheduling personnel, materials, and equipment; ensures safety guidelines are followed.
  • Oversees maintenance section office activities including human resources, public relations, facilities, inventory management, and general office matters.
  • Oversees operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 9 years in roadway maintenance or construction-related work; 3 years supervisory/managerial experience required.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; extreme temperatures; noise; hazards from moving vehicles, high places, chemicals.
  • Balancing, standing, walking; able to move between sites; able to communicate orally and perceive information by hearing and vision while operating vehicles/heavy equipment.
  • Pre-employment physical required. Drug testing mandatory for safety-impact positions with random testing; report within 30 minutes of notification during emergencies (24-hour on-call).
