Position Classification & Expected Hours of Work, and Travel:

  • This is a full‑time position.
  • Regular onsite work is required.
  • Days and hours of work may vary according to the needs of The Marine Mammal Center.
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday work is required as job duties demand.
  • Regular travel within California and occasional travel to the Hawai’ian Islands.

Compensation Range: $82,000 - $98,000 annual salary.

Job Summary

The Fleet & Field Facilities Senior Manager is responsible for managing the acquisition and maintenance of The Marine Mammal Center’s vehicle and vessel fleet, response equipment and the California field facilities (Castroville (MBO) and Morro Bay (SLO)). This position collaborates closely with the Field Operations & Response department regarding organizational transport vehicles as well as the Cetacean department regarding vessels. In addition, the Fleet & Field Facilities Manager will aid in the management and maintenance of key capital assets essential to the work and mission of the Center.

Essential

Functions Fleet Management (30%)
  • Oversees the acquisition, maintenance, and disposal of the Center’s vehicle and vessel fleet.
  • Manage vehicle fleet utilizing Keep Trucking software to ensure efficient fleet operations.
  • Manage and perform inspections on vehicle and vessel fleet and with vendors for timely repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance.
  • Manage vehicle branding and outfitting for response work.
  • Ensure that the vehicle and vessel fleet comply with all local, state, and federal regulations as well as all safety standards.
Building Operations & Maintenance (20%)
  • Manage and perform inspections of buildings and equipment at MBO and SLO.
  • Manage and or perform preventative and predictive maintenance tasks for equipment and components.
  • Complete workforce generated work orders.
  • Maintain inventory of needed supplies and materials.
  • Evaluate and provide support as needed with the construction, replacement, and repair of building systems and components.
  • Isolate, troubleshoot, and coordinate the repair of faulty life support and building systems and equipment as needed.
  • Determine and submit recommendations for improvements to facilities and life support systems.
Field Site Support (15%)
  • Partner with field site management to address facility related needs.
  • Identify and build relationships with local contractors, vendors, employees, and volunteers for successful completion of projects.
  • Communicate with field site management on pertinent information related to repairs, equipment, downtime, and project work.
  • Determine and recommend improvements for field site facilities and life support systems.
  • Provide response and animal transport support for field sites as needed.
Capital Projects (10%)
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, contractors, vendors, and partner agencies to complete assigned capital projects within specified time and budgetary guidelines.
  • Communicate project process, expected variances to project budget, and issues as they arise with management.
  • Manage, oversee and complete assigned capital projects as needed.
Leadership/Management (10%)
  • Provide departments budget advice and support for fleet and facilities expenses.
  • Manage and monitor all expenses related to fleet and operational work.
  • Provide guidance to departments for their fleet operations on policy and training.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
  • Perform special projects and research as assigned.
  • May actively serve on an organizational committee(s)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and experience with vehicle and vessel maintenance and repair methods/techniques.
  • Understanding of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and Safety Data Sheets requirements.
  • Knowledge of record keeping and documentation methods.
