POSITION INFORMATION

Position Title:

Maintenance Director

Reports To:

Superintendent

Pay Grade:
Commensurate with experience

Contract Days: 226 days (12-month)

FLSA Status:
Exempt

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Direct and manage all aspects of the district’s facilities maintenance and custodial programs, ensuring that all buildings, grounds, and equipment are maintained in a safe, clean, and efficient manner. Provide leadership and oversight for maintenance and custodial staff and oversee compliance with applicable laws, codes, and district policies.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education / Certification:
    High school diploma or GED required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Relevant trade certifications preferred (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or related).
  • Asbestos Designated Person certification and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Coordinator certification preferred; must obtain both within one year of employment if not already held.
  • Experience:

    Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance, construction, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience in a public school or governmental environment preferred.
  • Special Knowledge and

    Skills:

    Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general building systems.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal codes and regulations governing public school facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or similar software preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Facilities Management
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee all preventive and corrective maintenance for district facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive preventive maintenance program.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations in a timely and effective manner.
  • Ensure facilities comply with all applicable codes, regulations, and safety standards.
Personnel Management
  • Recruit, supervise, train, and evaluate maintenance and custodial department personnel.
  • Assign and prioritize work orders and monitor completion.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, safety, and accountability within the department.
Budget and Administration
  • Prepare and manage the annual maintenance department budget.
  • Obtain and evaluate bids and quotes for outside services and materials in compliance with district purchasing policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inventory, and expenditures.
  • Assist in long-range planning for facility improvements and capital projects.
Safety and Compliance
  • Ensure a safe working environment and enforce safe work practices among maintenance staff.
  • Coordinate with district administration on ADA compliance, environmental regulations, and other facility-related compliance matters.
  • Serve as the district’s Asbestos Designated Person and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Coordinator, or coordinate directly with those designated individuals during any transition period.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Work involves both office and field environments. Regular exposure to outdoor conditions, mechanical equipment, and physical labor is expected. Position may require lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, and responding to after‑hours emergencies. Travel between district facilities is required.

MENTAL DEMANDS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS / ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Ability to maintain emotional control under pressure. Frequent standing, walking, stooping, and reaching. Work around moving mechanical parts, chemicals, and outdoor environments. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
