Position Summary

This position is responsible for performing skilled duties in the operation of a water treatment plant. Duties involve routine inspection of plant processes and equipment. Works under general supervision. Functions as a Control Room Operator on an as‑needed basis. Responsible for supervising one or more plant operators on special jobs or assignments as directed.

Major Responsibilities
  • Monitors plant operations by observation, instrumentation and laboratory test results and makes process adjustments to predetermined parameters.
  • Contacts Water Plant Supervisor concerning problems with plant operations when needed.
  • Takes samples at various operating points in the plant process and interprets data.
  • Monitors condition of mechanical equipment and notifies appropriate personnel of needed repairs or any operational problems.
  • Observes all safety guidelines as initiated by NTMWD.
  • May be responsible for plant security during evening shifts.
  • Required to place equipment into operation or take equipment out of operation.
  • Responsible for the safe handling and unloading of various chemicals.
  • May be responsible for responding to various emergency situations as directed by supervisor.
  • Required to maintain thorough written process logs and records.
  • Runs various lab tests.
  • Monitors the Control Room SCADA System on an as‑needed basis.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Must possess the ability to supervise others.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate and document daily activities to ensure proper plant operation.
  • Must be able to run lab tests, interpret results, and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.
Education and Experience
  • Five years of experience in water treatment (credit given for college semesters).
  • Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (or predecessor agency) Class B Surface Water Operator's Certificate of Competency required.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Requires a valid Texas Driver's License.
Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment

This position requires physical exertion with lifting requirements up to 10 pounds daily for obtaining samples and turning valves, and up to 75 pounds weekly to clean basins using high‑pressure hoses and assist in repairs to pumps, motors and machinery while using various hand tools and equipment. Individuals must be able to make rounds and inspect equipment located in remote areas within the plant, occasionally at heights or depths in excess of 12 feet.

Working conditions include exposure to weather, odor, chemical hazards, gases and dust. Hand tools, broom, sample collectors, flow meters, respirators, SCBA's, lab equipment, and safety equipment will be used during normal activities.
