JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the production supervisor, the fitter/welder position is responsible for welding, fitting and joining, fabricating, and repairing metal and other weldable material. For large or specialized projects, fitters/welders are mainly involved with laying out and assembling subunits or units of materials, which they would then weld into position. The position is responsible for ensuring the product is fitted and welded to the specifications of each job and the outlined requirements consistent with the production of quality UT-passable welds.

The fitter welders specialize in fitting and welding transmission power poles, substation A-frames, high-mast poles, highway sign poles, and other tubular structures and have specific experience related to reading blueprints.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1 to 5 years’ fabrication experience
  • 1 to 2 years’ Fitter and Welder experience required
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints
  • Must be able to work as a member of a team
  • Overhead & Jib crane experience is required
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of welding concepts, practices and procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of welding symbols and diagrams
  • Knowledge of how to use temperature sticks and welding fillet gauges
  • Knowledge of how to use an Overhead and Jib Crane
  • Thorough knowledge of welding equipment, including but not limited to, torches, torch tips, and Air Arc
  • Skill in reading blueprints, and/or other printed instructional material in the welding of products or parts of welding symbols
  • Must maintain proficiency and pass a 2G test
  • Ability to weld with fluxcore and metalcore wire
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures (sometimes due to season)
  • Ability to report to work as scheduled and maintain good attendance
  • Ability to work 1st or 2nd Shift, as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, as needed
  • Positive, willing to learn and participate in a changing environment to reach a common goal
  • Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals
  • Successfully pass a welder test and a background check, including criminal history, drug screen, physical, audiogram, and vision test
  • Ability to use welding equipment such as torches, torch tips, and Air Arc
  • Ability to use temperature sticks and welding fillet gauges
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ability to perform welding duties using a wire welder
  • Ability to weld steel components with welding equipment as specified by layouts, engineering drawings, work orders, or verbal instructions
  • Ability to weld in various directions: flat and horizontal
  • Ability to perform fitting and joining, fabricating, and repairing metal and other weldable materials
  • Ability to perform setups, including laying out work using jigs/fixtures or hand layouts to fabricate parts and/or rework finished products
  • Ability to perform fabrication of multi-component parts
  • Ability to cross‑train and perform the work of other job tasks, in addition to the primary assigned position
  • Ability to use hoists, hand power tools, slings, grinders, cutting torch, and other hand tools related to the job’s needs
  • Ability to maintain functionality of equipment and notify management and/or maintenance department of needed repairs
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and utilize appropriate safety habits
  • Ability to perform other tasks, as required
  • Ability to inspect and correct welds as necessary to meet product specifications
  • Ability to examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications
  • Ability to perform job‑specific procedures, such as clamping, holding, tack‑welding, heat‑bending, grinding, or bolting component parts to obtain required configurations and positions
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow job order specifications, engineering drawings, and/or work orders
  • Ability to maintain functionality of equipment
  • Ability to maintain quality welds and UT‑passable welds
  • Ability to maintain production level as determined by supervisor
  • Must display a positive attitude and willingness to learn and participate in a changing environment to reach a common goal
  • Must maintain production and quality of finished products
