Job Summary:
The Welder-Fabricator will perform hands-on metal fabrication and welding to support an R&D production campus, while also managing inventory control, shipping and receiving. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working in the shop and keeping operations running smoothly.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Fabrication & Welding (Primary Focus)
- Performs welding using one or more processes (MIG, TIG, and/or stick) on steel, aluminum, and other materials per drawings, work instructions, and weld specifications.
- Fabricates, assembles, and modifies metal parts, fixtures, brackets, and structures to support production and R&D needs.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, engineering drawings, weld symbols, and shop sketches.
- Operates fabrication equipment including grinders, cut-off saws, drill presses, band saws, plasma/oxy-fuel cutters, and hand/power tools.
- Performs layout, measuring, cutting, grinding, and finishing of fabricated components to meet dimensional and quality requirements.
- Inspects completed welds and fabricated parts for quality, fit, and compliance with specifications.
- Maintains a clean, organized, and safe fabrication work area; performs routine maintenance on welding and fabrication equipment.
Tooling & Equipment
- Maintains the tool control program for on-site and off-site use.
- Maintains calibration records and coordinates calibration procedures and the exchange of tooling across geographical sites.
- Tracks and resolves equipment maintenance issues in-house or through 3rd-party vendors as directed.
- Follows all operating instructions and safety policies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Notable experience with construction/general fabrication.
- Metal working capability including MIG, TIG, and stick welding.
- Experience leading small teams of people performing a complex fabrication project.
- Experience working with contract machine shops and or contractors for portions of fabrication projects.
- Forklift certified and notable experience performing high accuracy forklift movements for equipment positioning and fabrication projects.
Desired Skills/Abilities:
- Welding certification(s) (e.g., AWS) or completion of a welding/fabrication training program.
- Experience with sheet metal fabrication, structural fabrication, or precision component work.
- HAZWOPER 40-hour certification.
- Formal prior Hazardous Shippers Certification or training.
- Prior commercial or military hazardous transportation and shipping experience a plus.
- Commercial Driver's License with Hazmat endorsement.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods standing, bending, and working in a fabrication/shop environment.
- Ability to wear required PPE (welding helmet, gloves, respirator, etc.) for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
- Some periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer for inventory and recordkeeping tasks.
