Under the general direction of the Family & Community Health (FCHS) Services Nurse Supervisor II and Program Manager, this Public Health Nurse I performs routine public health nursing work in clinical and/or non‑clinical settings based out of Alpine, Texas and requires regular travel to field offices in Marfa, Presidio, Fort Stockton and other satellite sites.
Essential Job Functions Direct Client Services (35%)Administers medications, immunizations, testing and treatments according to regional and DSHS Standing Delegation Orders. Conducts physical assessments and implements appropriate actions. Maintains patient records and reports, counsels patients, and uses independent clinical judgment for referrals.
Population‑Based Community Outreach (35%)Provides information on child health, maternal health, perinatal infant health, and tobacco cessation. Plans events, attends trainings, networks with stakeholders, assists with public health needs assessments, and supports disease prevention communication.
Disease Prevention/Control (20%)Identifies community resources, makes referrals, supports case management, conducts home visits, and monitors communicable diseases, ensuring compliance with immunization and disease control standards.
Other Related Duties (10%)Participates in disaster response and continuity operations, requires alternate shift patterns or locations, and maintains safe operation of state or personal vehicle with an acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Professional nursing theory and practice, including cultural, social and economic forces.
- Texas State Board of Nursing Practice Rules and Regulations.
- Public health principles, epidemiology, disease prevention, and health promotion.
- Clinic/office operations.
- Assessment of clients with complex health problems.
- Basic computer data input and internet use.
- CPR certification.
- Basic nursing skills.
- Effective communication with public, local officials, physicians and local agency personnel.
- Independent clinical judgment and program implementation.
- Leadership and confidentiality.
- Travel in state/personal vehicle.
- Active RN license in Texas or eligibility to obtain it prior to employment.
- Valid Texas Class C Driver’s license.
- Current CPR certification.
- Registered Nurse or recognized RN license via the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Minimum 2 years of nursing, public health, case management or infectious disease experience.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a medical clinical setting.
- Ability to travel up to 40% of the time throughout Texas via vehicle or air.
- Availability to accommodate travel and irregular hours.
