What You Will Do
  • Ensure continuity of appropriate patient care by planning staff assignments, providing direct patient care, and evaluating outcomes of care within the assigned unit.
  • Coordinate, implement, and monitor shift activities to facilitate efficient unit operations and maintain patient care plans.
  • Assist in the formulation and implementation of unit–specific procedures and policies.
  • Assess the patient's physical, emotional, and social circumstances; conduct nursing rounds; determine if planned or required care has been provided; make individual decisions and referrals to other services; and participate in patient‑centered staff conferences.
  • Develop, assign, and/or review the development and modification of plans that provide safe nursing care.
  • Serve as the unit liaison and resource nurse‑in‑charge, exchanging information with staff and physicians; contact other services for specialized treatment, tests, facilities, equipment, and material support.
  • Maintain safety and control of patients, employees, and visitors in the unit; investigate and prepare reports on accidents and other incidents.
  • Perform duties of Staff Nurse and other nursing personnel as needed.
  • Make daily staffing adjustments and assign work to professional/ancillary staff according to patient acuity to ensure all work is performed in accordance with established policies and standards of care.
  • Oversee the work of nursing personnel and instruct them in providing technical care such as drug administration and the setup, regulation, and monitoring of intravenous and other equipment.
  • Review observations and nursing interpretation of patient data and condition and interpret electronic and other instrumentation displays.
  • Collaborate with manager and educator to facilitate assignment of new employees for in‑service instruction and orientation.
  • Assist in the orientation and supervision of students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of their training.
  • Verify that all nursing tasks and ordered medical treatments/diagnostic procedures have been performed and documented in the medical record.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the fiscal management process and make decisions that utilize resources effectively; apply cost‑effective measures in the utilization of personnel, supplies, and equipment and ensure charges are captured for services provided.
  • Answer inquiries; communicate and interpret policies, procedures, and standards of practice to staff, patients, families, and visitors to promote understanding and consistency.
  • Interpret nursing goals, policies, and procedures governing nursing security, safety, and visiting conditions to employees, patients, and visitors.
  • Investigate and answer queries from physicians, patients, and visitors about patient care.
  • Resolve complaints, conflicts, and operational problems; inform the Nurse Manager/Nursing Clinical Supervisor of any problems or issues that cannot be resolved or require intervention.
  • Identify problems, document resolution, and communicate to applicable parties to ensure operational issues are handled and resolved timely.
  • Interpret nursing, personnel, and other applicable administrative policies; take personnel/disciplinary action as needed and in consultation with the Nurse Manager.
  • Follow up with the Nurse Manager regarding employee performance or disciplinary action taken.
  • Provide nursing care according to the medical regime and appropriate nursing intervention for the patient's condition; include care of the ambulatory/clinic patient.
  • Initiate assessment based on the patient's presenting problems or needs, the physician's diagnosis, and the functional health framework during a clinic visit.
  • Collect key information from patient, family, laboratory, and other medical reports; ensure all consents necessary for treatment/procedure have been signed and identification procedures carried out.
