GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Parks & Recreation Crew Chief serves as a working supervisor responsible for the daily maintenance, care, and operation of municipal parks, sports fields (primarily natural turf), recreational areas, facilities, and right-of-way spaces. This position supervises permanent and seasonal staff, coordinates work assignments, and ensures that parks and athletic fields are safe, well-maintained, and prepared for practices, games, tournaments, and special events.

Under general supervision, the Crew Chief exercises considerable independent judgment in planning, prioritizing, and completing work. Duties include turf management, irrigation repair, grounds keeping, equipment operation, facility maintenance, safety oversight, staff supervision, and customer service interactions with sports leagues, user groups, and the general public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate full-time, part-time, seasonal staff, and contractors.
  • Assign and oversee daily work tasks, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Identify training needs and ensure staff receive proper instruction in grounds keeping, field maintenance, equipment use, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain positive labor relations and ensure compliance with City personnel policies.
  • Serve as on-duty supervisor during high-volume field use, evenings, weekends, tournaments, or special events.
B. Turf & Sports Field Maintenance (Primary Duty Area)
  • Perform and supervise natural turf maintenance including mowing, edging, aeration, topdressing, fertilizing, over seeding, sod installation, moisture management, and soil conditioning.
  • Prepare all athletic playing surfaces to league or tournament specifications, including lining, striping, grooming, dragging, logo painting, mound and plate maintenance, and field layout conversions.
  • Manage field renovation projects such as leveling, grading, sod replacement, infield repair, and seasonal reconstruction.
  • Oversee Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices including weed control, pest monitoring, and disease management.
  • Calibrate and apply pesticides and fertilizers; oversee all chemical applications.
C. Irrigation System Management
  • Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair irrigation systems across parks and sports fields.
  • Monitor water schedules, detect malfunctions, troubleshoot mechanical/valve/electrical issues, and coordinate repair efforts as needed.
D. Parks, Grounds, & Facility Maintenance
  • Mow, trim, edge, and maintain general park grounds, trails, landscaped areas, and right-of-ways.
  • Repair and maintain fences, gates, bleachers, dugouts, backstops, playground equipment, and other park amenities.
  • Perform general building/facility maintenance including minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC troubleshooting.
  • Maintain cleanliness of parks, restrooms, recreation areas, and public spaces.
  • Perform pothole patching and roadway/parking lot repair work when assigned.
E. Equipment Operation & Maintenance
  • Operate a wide range of equipment including tractors, commercial mowers, utility vehicles, infield groomers, sprayers, tillers, loaders, and other power tools.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; coordinate repairs requiring outside vendors.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, materials, chemicals, seed, and supplies.
F. Administration & Coordination
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports relating to maintenance, chemical applications, scheduling, incidents, and work orders.
