American Humane Society’s renowned No Animals Were Harmed® program has multiple on‑call opportunities available with training. The organization seeks individuals with a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Registered/Licensed/Certified Veterinary Technician (RVT/LVT/CVT) license, or a B.S. in Animal Science or related field to represent the program as a Certified Animal Safety Representative (CASR) on motion picture, television, commercial and new media locations.

Job SummaryRepresent the No Animals Were Harmed® program on motion picture, television, commercial and new media locations, ensuring humane treatment of animal performers, documenting animal housing and care, and advising on animal safety issues to uphold AH’s Guidelines for the Safe Use of Animals in Filmed Media. Engage with animal trainers, production executives, crew and sometimes media.
Responsibilities and Duties- Monitoring Animal Action in Filmed Media: Educate film personnel, assist with animal performance, ensure safety and welfare.
- Report Writing: Produce timely and detailed reports that describe animal action, safety precautions, and accountability. Reports inform certification decisions and provide post‑production guidance.
- Communication and Diplomacy: Work effectively with Hollywood program staff and production personnel; liaise with local agencies when required.
- Location of Work Assignments: Work locally and nationwide; travel as needed, often on short notice. Assignments range from one hour to several months with 10‑12 hour production days.
- Research: Investigate species specifics and humane care requirements; coordinate with scheduling for guidance.
- Dangerous Animal Action: Seek instructions for explosive, stunt, or pyrotechnic scenes requiring special oversight.
- Process Overview: Read scripts, consult trainers, log pre‑production data, coordinate housing and transport, submit confidentiality paperwork, and turn in reports per policy.
Skills and Abilities
- Must have one of the following qualifications: DVM, RVT/LVT/CVT, or B.S. in Animal Science or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Diversity of experience in animal health and behavior preferred.
- Commitment to animal welfare.
- Equine knowledge and experience preferred.
- Broad knowledge of animals (horses, snakes, spiders, fish, dogs, birds, goats, cats).
- Excellent verbal and written communication; active listening.
- Diplomatic collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of special effects and stunts involving animals preferred.
- Ability to work independently in the field.
- Detail‑oriented and organized.
- Excellent judgment.
- Analytical and recommendation skills.
- Computer proficiency for email and report writing.
- Completion of American Humane Society Certified Animal Safety Representative Training Course required.
- Primarily outdoors in diverse climates; capable of hiking, walking, climbing, balancing, standing, and lifting 10 kg or more.
- Valid driver’s license and own transportation required.
- Local, national and international travel on‑call; often on short notice.
- Work can occur any time of day or night; production days 10‑12 hours.
- Uniform, computer, paperwork/guidelines, identification, automobile, digital camera, binoculars, cell phone, flashlight, batteries, weather equipment, change of clothes, personal first aid kit.
