Conservation Corps New Mexico (CCNM)
As part of Conservation Legacy and an Ameri Corps program, CCNM aims to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. CCNM is focused on connecting youth, young adults, and recent era military veterans with conservation service projects on public lands. CCNM operates programs across New Mexico and western Texas/Oklahoma that engage individuals and strengthen communities through service and conservation.

The CCNM Las Cruces office manages the Individual Placement Program.

Mentorship
These Individual Placements are unique development Ameri Corps positions. Participants are paired with a local supervisor and gain technical, hands-on experience in the work of these organizations or agencies. Site supervisors commit to facilitate career development; introduce participants to numerous pathways within the conservation field; create meaningful learning opportunities; and provide technical, hands-on experience in the work of these organizations or agencies.

The Fort Hood Natural and Cultural Resources Management Branch protects, sustains and enhances the natural and cultural resources on Fort Hood Installation (Installation) to enable Soldiers to conduct mission training. The selected candidates will support staff with ongoing understanding of golden-cheeked warbler songbird populations distribution, nesting, and occurrence on the Installation. This project will provide critical information for compliance with Section 7 Consultation and Biological Opinion, making ecosystem and species level management decisions, and assessing resiliency in accordance with natural resource management plans and military training landscape plans.

Participants will also have the opportunity to shadow cultural resources, bat acoustic monitoring, invertebrate sampling, and wild pig trapping depending on their individual interests.

Description of Duties:

• Conduct monitoring of the golden-cheeked warbler on various study sites of Fort Hood, Texas.
• Re-sight of color-banded warblers, locate/monitor nests, map territories, target mist net and band birds.
• Conduct point-transect distance sampling.
• Data collection, management, and manipulation to include but are not limited to Trimble GPS units, Field maps, Arc Pro, and Excel.

Conditions:
The workday starts an hour before sunrise and involves working in remote, hot, sunny environment with mosquitoes, chiggers, fire ants, cacti, snakes, and poison ivy.

Qualifications:

• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
• At least 18 years of age.
• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an Ameri Corps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
