Job Summary

Performs highly complex inspection work, overseeing and conducting inspections and quality assurance reviews to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and agency policies. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Functions
  • Oversees and conducts packing plant inspections for quality control and ensures compliance with plant standards, codes, and state laws; makes recommendations for correction and proper disposition of violations noted during inspections; conducts follow‑up inspections to ensure that standards are being met and corrective action is taken.
  • Implements a program of inspections and enforcement of various laws and regulations within the packing plant; responds to and investigates complaints related to packing plant products; researches and identifies the causes of violations; prepares related reports and correspondence.
  • Reviews and implements a quality control system; evaluates packing plant programs and procedures; develops recommendations for improvements in packing plant programs; monitors and updates operating procedures.
  • Trains and supervises inmates.
  • Maintains the security of assigned inmates.
  • Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Education, Experience, and Training
  • Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.
  • Three years full-time, wage‑earning experience in quality assurance or inspection in a meat processing operation. Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may be substituted for each year of experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines related to food processing.
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods of meat inspection quality control procedures.
  • Knowledge of standard food packing plant practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.
  • Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
  • Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
  • Skill in analyzing calculations, specifications, reports, records, and testing requirements for all meats and meat products.
  • Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in problem‑solving techniques.
  • Skill to train and supervise the work of inmates.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 15‑44 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
  • Conditions include working inside and outside, around machines with moving parts and objects, around vehicles, radiant and electrical energy, closely with others, alone, protracted or irregular hours, excessive heat, cold, dampness and chill, constant noise, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, on ladders or scaffolding, vibration, and traveling by car, van, bus and airplane.
  • Equipment used: computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, meat product testing/inspection equipment, dolly, and automobile.
