The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) examine the natural environment, including life, from the core of the Earth to its upper atmosphere, deep in time through to the present and modelling towards the future. Research within BEES is clustered within four general thematic areas:
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology;
Climate Science;
Environmental Change, Sustainability and Resources, Paleo environments and Earth History. The School of BEES has over 150 academic and professional staff, over 170 research students and 60 honours students.

The Research Associate/Post-Doctoral Fellow (Level

A) contributes towards the research effort of the Centre for Marine Science and Innovation and develops their research expertise through managing and pursuing projects within the area of marine ecology, with a particular focus on marine restoration.

About the Role
  • Level A - $113K - $121K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 1 year
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to Professor Adriana Vergés and has no direct reports.

Specific Responsibilities For This Role Include
  • Contribute independently or as a team member in collaborative research with a focus on enhancing the quality of research outcomes in the discipline area.
  • Conduct research (as per the norms of the discipline) and/or enable research teams to create scholarly output that is recognised by peers.
  • Undertake specific research project/s under the guidance of a research leader and contribute to the development of research activities.
  • Support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets.
  • Undertake discipline-appropriate research activities, e.g. underwater fieldwork surveys, literature reviews, data gathering and/or recording of results using appropriate research methods.
  • Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required.
  • Assist with the supervision of research students in the research area where required.
  • Manage projects to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Provision of practical and efficient research support to stakeholders, assisting in the conduct of research that contributes to a better understanding of marine restoration, and contributing where appropriate.
  • Support in the conceptualisation, design, and successful conduct of marine restoration projects.
  • Perform quantitative/qualitative data analyses as required by the research project.
  • Monitor research protocols, provide problem-solving and resolutions to any evolving problems related to design, implementation and analysis.
  • Liaise with organisations, data custodians, stakeholders, collaborators, and actively participate in meetings and discussions as required.
  • Coordinate and lead marine fieldwork activities, including SCUBA diving and botating.
  • Coordinate and lead science communication and community outreach activities.
  • Perform occasional teaching duties (e.g. lectures, seminars, practicals, unit coordination) as requested.

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high‑quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to the opportunity.
