Location: Tennessee Colony
Safety Officer I - Unit Risk Manager
The role performs routine safety and health program work, assisting with development of safety policies and procedures, providing training, inspecting work areas for hazards, and aiding in accident investigations. Work is performed under moderate supervision.
Essential Functions- Conduct inspections of unit operations and facilities to ensure compliance with established risk management guidelines, policies, and procedures; prepare evaluative reports; recommend improvements and modifications; and respond to inquiries about unit operations.
- Assist in investigating reported hazards, accidents, injuries, fires, and other incidents; inspect construction, remodeling, and renovation sites for safety standard compliance; conduct ADA site assessments; and prepare inspection and investigative reports and recommendations.
- Assist unit administration during high‑risk situations, implement corrective actions, and prepare reports while maintaining communication with other departments and regional staff.
- Monitor use, maintenance, and storage of hazardous materials, safety equipment, and devices; monitor environmental factors, operating procedures, safety procedures, contamination, and pollution.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and conducting safety‑training programs; ensure compliance with training requirements and documentation; provide technical assistance.
- Perform other marginal duties as assigned.
- Education
:
Graduation from an accredited high school, GED, or equivalent. - Experience
:
One year full‑time wage‑earning experience in criminal justice, risk management or a related field. Equivalent experience may be substituted for semester hours from accredited colleges or universities. - Certification
:
Successful completion of the Alternate Unit Risk Manager (AURM), Collateral Duty Safety Officer (CDSO), or OSHA certification programs is preferred. - Knowledge
:
Risk management program operations, applicable state and federal laws, agency and departmental structure and policies. - Skills
:
Clear communication, coordination with staff and external parties, problem‑solving, documentation and reporting, technical report preparation, training program development, hazardous situation operation, and use of environmental/health/safety instruments and equipment.
- Physical ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, crawl, twist, reach, grasp, pull, bend, climb stairs and ladders, operate a motor vehicle, lift 45 lbs. and more, and perform other physical tasks as specified.
- Ability to work in varied conditions, including indoor/outdoor, near moving machinery, radiant and electrical energy exposure, heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, gases, silica, asbestos, uneven surfaces, heights, ladders, scaffolding, and traveling by car, bus, plane.
- Proficiency with computer equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, environmental/health/safety equipment, dolly, and automobile.
