Job Overview

Student Highway Maintenance Technician - Aspermont, TX (2601054)

TxDOT’s Abilene District is looking for students to work in an intern program during the summer months, beginning in May and going through August, with potential year‑round work based on schedule and availability.

Interns must be enrolled in high school or an institution of higher education, including vocational schools, whether attending in person or online.

Responsibilities
  • Perform entry‑level and routine maintenance work, including plant and landscape maintenance, maintaining comfort stations and rights‑of‑way, minor equipment repair, and assisting with roadway repair.
  • Assist in repairing and erecting signs, repairing drums and/or barricades, and moving items related to these duties.
  • Assist in warehousing and supply functions.
  • Assist with repairs to potholes, roadway shoulders and edges, guardrails, signs, and other related work.
  • Assist with traffic control, including placing and gathering cones, flagging traffic, and other related tasks.
  • Operate light equipment (must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license).
  • Maintain picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Move and clean up litter and roadway debris.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
  • Perform plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees, brush, mowing, fertilizing and watering.
  • Perform some carpentry work.
  • Perform some clerical duties.
  • Repair and install posts and mailbox supports.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a student in high school or any educational institution, including trade/vocational school.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age and enrolled in high school or higher education.
  • Employees at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license may be assigned driving duties and may use power tools.
  • No experience required (experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Required to wear protective hard hat and other personal protective equipment.

Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection.

Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

Must balance‑walk, stand, crouch on various surfaces without falling; kneel/bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).

Lift/raise objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position.

Reach/extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Stand for prolonged periods of time.

Close visual acuity work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts, using measurement devices, and operating machines such as drill presses, power saws, and mills.

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.

Safety and Drug Testing

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. The Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation does not authorize medical marijuana as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
