The City of Luling is hiring for an Electric Groundman Apprentice
. This entry level position is within the electrical utility and line construction industry. It supports journeyman linemen and crew members by managing job site safety, handling materials, organizing tools, and preparing for daily field tasks. The role combines manual labor with on‑the‑job training to build foundational skills for advancing to a lineman apprenticeship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Job Site Preparation:
Load and unload poles, transformers, and hardware; stage materials so linemen have immediate access to what they need. - Tool & Equipment Handling:
Clean, inspect, and organize hand tools, rigging gear, and specialized equipment. - Site Clean Up:
Clear brush, manage scrap wire, and keep the work area safe and organized. - Ground Support:
Assist linemen with pulling cables, digging holes for anchors and poles, and setting up barricades or traffic control. - Safety Protocols:
Set up grounding equipment, learn minimum approach distances, and help ensure overall crew safety. - Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Texas Class C driver’s license; ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 90 days (preferred).
- Ability to pass a background check and pre‑employment drug screen.
- Must be willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
- Physical capability to perform rigorous manual labor and routinely lift up to 50‑75 pounds.
- Certifications:
First Aid, CPR, and OSHA 10 certifications are preferred.
Work Availability:
- Monday – Friday. Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and on‑call for emergency storm restoration.
- Work is entirely outdoors in varying, often harsh weather conditions (heat, cold, rain). It involves active construction sites where you may work near energized, high‑voltage equipment, requiring strict adherence to safety rules and PPE.
