Position Information

TxDOT’s Fleet Operations Division seeks an Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair a wide range of wheeled vehicles, including passenger vehicles, medium‑and‑heavy‑duty trucks, and construction equipment. Mechanics support daily operations and respond to emergency and inclement weather events across the state.

Responsibilities
  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti‑locking systems.
  • Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Complete repair order paperwork and accurately enter data into the fleet information management system.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges.
  • Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform quality assurance and analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for use by checking required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and perform complex diagnostic work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Travel to other shops throughout the state as required.
Equipment Mechanic II additional responsibilities
  • Train less experienced technicians.
Equipment Mechanic III additional responsibilities
  • Lead and train less experienced technicians.
  • Perform duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Equipment Mechanic I – 2 years in automotive, medium‑heavy truck or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II – 4 years in automotive, medium‑heavy truck or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic III – 7 years in automotive, medium‑heavy truck or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license. Position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Must have a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain a Class “A” CDL within 120 calendar days from the date of course registration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Diesel or automotive technology associate’s degree or technical certifications.
  • ASE certifications.
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Experience working on heavy equipment or construction equipment.
Equipment Mechanic I Competencies
  • Proficient skill in using hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices.
  • Proficient in mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines.
  • Proficient in diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to codes and specifications.
  • Proficient in using computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmission repair.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems.
  • Expertise in brake repairs, including antilocking, mechanical, air, and hydraulic brake systems.
  • Proficient diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.
Equipment Mechanic II & III Additional Competencies
