Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III – Fleet Operations Division
TxDOT’s Fleet Operations Division seeks an Equipment Mechanic I, II or III based in Yoakum, TX. The role supports Texas transportation by maintaining and repairing a wide variety of wheeled vehicles, including passenger vehicles, medium‑ and heavy‑duty trucks, and construction equipment. The mechanic works independently on assignments but reports unusual issues to a supervisor and may travel to other shops throughout the state.
Responsibilities- Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti‑locking systems.
- Analyze and interpret computer‑diagnostic equipment information.
- Complete repair order paperwork and enter data accurately into the fleet information management system.
- Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges.
- Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; move related items as required.
- Perform quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
- Prepare vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile radios.
- Troubleshoot, test and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
- Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and perform complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Trains less experienced technicians. (Equipment Mechanic II)
- Leads and trains less experienced technicians and performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence. (Equipment Mechanic III)
- Equipment Mechanic I – 2 years in automotive, medium‑/heavy truck or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
- Equipment Mechanic II – 4 years in automotive, medium‑/heavy truck or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
- Equipment Mechanic III – 7 years in automotive, medium‑/heavy truck or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
- Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Valid driver’s license and Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or must obtain a Class "A" CDL within 120 calendar days of course registration; two attempts to pass written and driving exams.

- ASE Certifications
- Experience using diagnostic equipment and software
- Experience working on heavy equipment or construction equipment
- Proficient skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade.
- Proficient skill in mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines.
- Proficient skill in diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications.
- Proficient skill in using computers and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel and Word.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics.
- Ability to follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmission repair.
- Proficient skill in troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems.
- Proficient skill in brake repairs to include anti‑locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems.
- Proficient diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.
- Extensive knowledge of mechanical equipment operation and maintenance.
